Whether you love them or hate them, it never hurts to know a little bit about fraternities and sororities.  You’ve seen the films:  Animal House, Going Greek, and School Daze.  Depending on the fraternity or sorority, the organization may be a stereotype or an exception to these popular titles.
The Greek system survived through much adversity.  Many national and local fraternities have closed down from hazing and poor behavior.  As a result, the remaining organizations focus on community service, character development, and social ties between members.

Because the practices of all Greek organizations differ in their rush process, initiation, and rituals, we cannot give you specific details of every house.  We can do, however, is provide a solid foundation of the Greek system and assistance with your decision to join a fraternity of sorority.  The editors for CollegeCodex.com are both Greek and non-Greek members.  We’ll be able to discuss the costs and benefits, and encourage you to make your own decision.

Hazing
Any time during the process of joining a Greek organization, hazing has the potential to develop.  Every organization will have an anti-hazing policy, although not all policies are followed.  In a situation where you suspect hazing, leave the organization.  Plenty of other fraternities or sororities would be more than willing to call you a member without gratuitous treatment.

If a hazing experience causes a person to harbor harsh feelings of animosity toward an organization, he or she has the option to report the event to the college’s Greek administration.  Cases of hazing are taken seriously.  Once an organization is accused of participating in hazing practices, the organization risks being asked to leave the university.
