First, let’s talk about your security and safety and whom you are
moving away from. Trust us, we here at CollegeCodex.com are not trying
to preach to you. However, it would be considerate to remember that the
loved ones you are leaving are very likely concerned, happy, and
thrilled for you, but yet at the same time terrified for you. Watching
you head off in life, and that is exactly what moving off to college
is, can be tough for some parents. Whether your parents show signs of
these anxieties or not it is a good idea to take a little time to show
them what we found for you. Afterwards you will be much more aware of
the crime statistics at your college and your loved ones will know that
you are keeping an eye out for your own safety.
Access to Info that Matters
In recent years the federal government passed a detailed Act now known
as “the Jeanne Clery Act” making it very simple for students, loved
ones and the general public to learn accurate information about all
aspects of criminal activity at every college campus across the nation.
Now, by law, every crime committed on or near a college campus or
against a student while near a college community is reported to the FBI
and then categorized. The U.S. Department of Education compiles the
data as prepared by the FBI into easy to understand demographics for
each and every college campus. The federal government sponsored
information is offered in adobe format and to get it you just need to
do the following two things: first go to www.ed.gov; and
then secondly find the little horizontal box labeled “keyword search”
and enter the words “Clery Act” then press enter. That should do it.
In addition to that, the parents of Jeanne Clery, a young woman who was
murdered on a college campus and whom the Act is named for, have helped
to establish an information network called Security on Campus
Incorporated. The website for this organization is www.campussafety.org
and is nothing less than the epiphany of college crime statistics and
victim prevention websites. Please take the time to at least briefly
skim these websites
