5 Tips for Using Space Effectively PDF Print this Guide Email this Guide

College students claim they don’t have enough space in their dorm room or apartment, but they’re probably using their space ineffectively.  With this guide, we’ll show you how to maximize your organization and storage.

  1. Add a Second Rod to Your Closet.  Two rods (one about three feet under the other one) immediately doubles the amount of clothes you’re able to fit in your closet.  It’s practical, and necessary, if you plan on bringing a lot of shirts.
  2. Storage Bins.  They hold miscellaneous items and slide neatly under your bed.  Larger storage bins (ones with sliding drawers) are capable of holding televisions, lamps, and microwaves.  Just get creative.
  3. Walls.  They are capable of holding calendars, photos, even houseplants.  If you have trouble remembering to do assignments, post your syllabi to the wall near your desk.
  4. Keep Your Desk Organized.  The last thing you want is a cluttered desk.  In college, your desk may act as a place for homework, a dinner table, a cutting board, and a place for your computer.  If you keep your desk clean, you’ll be able to finish your work in less time and be more productive.
  5. Keep Practical Objects Nearby.  There’s no reason to store your stapler in a box under your bed.  And you don’t need to keep your tape dispenser in your closest.  Find the objects you use frequently and place them within arms length of our desk.
