Page 1 of 4 Let’s set up a scenario: you receive your first paper back
covered in vague comments. “Where’s your evidence?” “Not
exactly,” and the ever annoying, “Incomplete.” You were a great
writer in high school, what happened? We'll cover the differences
between high school and college papers, and we'll provide a time-tested
strategy for writing exceptional papers.
In high school, we were able to throw sentences together, use
impressive words, stack ideas on top of each other, spell check, print,
and await our A. It’s kind of like children playing house; they set
up the stage and hold the behavior roles, but they are still only
acting. In college, we realize we were only pretending—with our big
words, shallow cliches, and run on sentences—to be great writers. Now
is the time to relearn analysis.
Those years of summarization essays are over. You’re now an undergrad
and, whether you plan to move on to get your Masters degree or not,
your course work will prepare you to think as a graduate student.
