Practice It
The only way to become a better critical thinker is to use your skills
often. So, let’s use it as much as we can. Next time you see a film,
ask yourself this question: “What is the screenwriter saying about our
society?”
You can find the answer to this question in every film, from American Beauty and Pulp Fiction to Garden State and The Incredibles.
To analyze these films as a critical thinker, you will have to
temporarily suspend your opinions of the film until you discuss all
parts, including the plot, characters, directing, musical score and
soundtrack, art direction and cinematography, and the editing. You
will also have to ignore the opinions of critics and friends to develop
your own opinion. Finally, you may look back at previous films you
have seen and change your opinion. Perhaps Harold and Kumar Go to
White Castle was more than a shallow buddy film, but instead a unique
perspective about minorities in America. Perhaps The Village was
disguised as a commentary on the war in Iraq.
