Thinking Critically
To write great papers, participate fruitfully during class discussions,
and defend yourself in argumentation, you must become capable of
critical thought. We all have it, but many times it has to be dragged
out of us.
Critical thinkers have a few responsibilities:
-
Capable of thinking independently
- Willing to suspend their judgment and opinions
- Able to detect faulty logic and reasoning
-
Willing to abandon their previous beliefs
The tasks above are not simple. For example, in a philosophy course,
it may not be easy for religious students to abandon their beliefs
about their faith in favor of an alternative to the creation of life.
In a political science course, it may not be easy for a strongly
liberal student to defend a strongly conservative policy. Students may
struggle to achieve all the goals listed above; however, achieving the
goals will allow you to analyze situations and concepts thoroughly, and
develop sound arguments for a topic.
